While you are heading off to the pharmacy for your over-the-counter cold and flu medications, have you considered what a naturopath could do for you? Naturopathic therapies can be extremely helpful in both preventing and managing the symptoms of these illnesses.

Here are some of the most common naturopathic treatments used for cold and flu season.

  • Echinacea : Echinaforce® or Echinaforce® Kids – These are herbal remedies that can be helpful in the early stages of a cold/flu to help decrease the severity and duration of the illness. However, these products do not have any effect on Influenza viruses. To be effective, they need to be taken as soon as you feel a cold/flu coming on. They come in liquid form, tablets or lozenges. Symptoms respond well when Echinacea is used within 48 hours but taking it later than this does not significantly reduce suffering from a cold/flu. The dosage is 3-4 ml (0.12 – 0.15 fl oz) every 2-3 hours for 3 days.
  • Zinc : Zicam® Cold Remedy – This is a good remedy for colds and flu, but has been known to cause anosmia (loss of smell) in some people. It should not be taken during pregnancy or breastfeeding. The dosage is 2 swabs in each nostril, 3 times per day for 5 days.
  • Grapefruit Seed Extract : This is a liquid antibacterial/antimicrobial solution that can help with early stages of a respiratory illness before it reaches the lungs and causes invasive symptoms such as coughing etc., Grapefruit seed extract can also be used topically on cuts and scrapes to prevent infection from setting in. It can also be helpful if there are any itching skin lesions around your mouth or nose.
  • Vitamin C : Dimitri P. Skountzos, D.O., N.D., says “It’s important to note that vitamin C is not an anti-inflammatory, but it does boost the immune system by increasing white blood cell activity.” The best forms of Vitamin C are natural products like camu camu , acerola and black currant . Dosage is 500 mg every 1-2 hours for 3 days.

We all know the winter season is not an easy time for our immune system. It’s important to stay healthy during this cold and flu season, but it can be hard when you feel like your head is spinning or your chest is congested. Whether you are feeling a little under the weather, suffering from allergies, or recovering from something more serious like pneumonia, there are plenty of naturopathic treatments available that will help support your body through these difficult times. If you want someone who understands how to invest in natural healing practices while also making sure that they work with conventional medicine too (because we understand what doctors require), give us a call!

We know that the efficacy of naturopathic medicine dates back to the 1890s, and are heartened to see naturopathic medicine undergo a rapid increase in public interest in recent years as a result of the  growing consumer movement to solve the healthcare puzzle using prevention, wellness and respect for nature’s inherent healing ability.
